Not Worthy, Not Enough
“I haven’t told this to anyone” I said to my grandfather. “I am ashamed. I wish I would just stop hearing the voice inside my head that whispers: you are not worthy, you are not enough…nobody will love me.
Whenever I am alone, the voice returns to haunt me. If only I had tried harder.”
“You haven’t really thought about what this voice is telling you,” said the old man, “because if you had, you would have realized that it is the biggest error of all. Our greatest fear – that we are not enough – and most of us feel it, you are not alone in this – comes from us believing that we can somehow change what the Divine created perfect. This false belief is the source of all your inner turmoil, anxiety and fear. We cannot. Your worth is not given to you by what you have, by what you do, by what you think, or by other people. Your worth is given to you by the Divine , and that’s not negotiable because you haven’t created yourself. You can have a horrific experience by thinking otherwise, but the reality stays the same regardless of what you think. Give up the thought that you can add to, change or alter what God made perfect, and the voice will vanish.”
“But how?” I asked. “How do I do that?”
“Let’s go for a walk together. Look at a stranger as he passes by, and say to him:
Because the Divine created you in perfect love, you are perfect just the way you are.
He doesn’t need to hear you. You need to hear yourself. Here’s another person coming your way. Do it again.
What do you notice? How do you feel?”
